Samsung Dex for Windows and Mac: how to download and use

Contents

Previously, The site already published a post about how to use Samsung Dex by connecting a Samsung Galaxy Note or Galaxy S smartphone to a monitor or computer with a cable or using a Dex Station or Dex Pad. Now there is another alternative: Samsung Dex para Windows 10, 7 and Mac OS: connect smartphone with USB cable to computer or laptop, and the resulting Samsung Dex functions are available in a window (or full screen) in operation the system is already up and running. This use case is discussed below.

The official page reports that the PC version of Samsung Dex is compatible with the Galaxy Note 10, S10 and other devices of the same generation, but I have everything works fine with the Galaxy Note 9 with Android 10 what's more, i guess the same is true. also for the S9 line.

Where to download Samsung Dex for Windows or Mac OS

The necessary software to run Samsung Dex on a computer is enabled on the official web portal at https://www.samsung.com/ru/apps/samsung-dex/ (or you can go to samsungdex.comthe redirection to the desired page will occur automatically).

The installation of the program should not cause any problems and does not contain any nuances, except that you will have to disconnect your smartphone from the computer during installation, if it is connected.

Once installed, A message will appear saying that you need to connect your phone to the computer via USB to run Samsung Dex, I would recommend using USB 3.0.

Connecting and using Samsung Dex on a computer or laptop

Connecting the phone to a computer to use Samsung Dex is very simple:

  1. Connect your phone with the USB cable. The Samsung Dex application on the computer should be working.
  2. If your smartphone asks you to "start streaming to Samsung Dex", press "Start". If there is no such request, go to the notification area and activate the mode “File transfer” for USB connection.
  3. Clever: this will open a Samsung Dex window with the same options as when you connect the phone to a separate monitor or TV.

The application configuration only contains two items: starts automatically when the phone is connected to the computer and flashes the icon when notifications are received on the phone; both are enabled by default. If the icon starts to blink constantly, even without notifications, I recommend turning off the second function.

Regarding the use of the Samsung Dex there are no differences with the version “normal” through the dock, everything works exactly the same. Of the nuances:

  • Window mode and full screen mode (button activated “to expand”) its compatible. To exit full screen mode, move the mouse pointer to the top center of the screen.
  • Notifications from your phone are only displayed “inside” from Dex's window, not in main operating system notifications. If you want them to appear in the notification center, take a look at the standard Your Phone app on Windows 10; works great with Samsung smartphones.
  • Image quality (which is especially noticeable on the full screen) it is worse than when connected directly to the monitor: signal via USB is transmitted compressed. Sound comes out of the computer's speakers (can be changed to output via phone speakers in Samsung Dex taskbar sound settings).
  • You can copy files from your computer to your phone simply by dragging them to the desktop from the Samsung Dex window, are saved in the download folder. Sometimes, transfer fails (in my case, a message about the wrong file type). I have not found any way to copy from phone to computer (except accessing the phone memory through PC Explorer).
  • Changing the keyboard to Russian or English is done using the Alt key combination + Shift (for Dex on Windows). At the same time, the change works correctly when the default Android keyboard is set in Android settings, whatever the case, I couldn't change the keyboard language from Gboard to Samsung Dex.

Due: everything works fine and, believe, for someone it will be useful: the use of mobile applications from the PC in this way, especially if it's about writing, it can be very comfortable. Although, subjectively, it is much more impressive to use a smartphone as a computer without the latter's mediation.

By the way, for those of you who don't know, Samsung has another official smartphone-to-computer conversion app: Samsung Flow. Unlike Dex, does not need you to have one of the best models, but it will also work on the manufacturer's mid-range devices.
