I love the science fiction movie genre. Futuristic scenarios, amazing pictures, a tight story that ties it all together: that's a recipe for a blockbuster. Anyone who has grown up in the years 80 Y 90 will be intimately familiar with the Terminator franchise.
And once I moved into the machine learning space, My appreciation and interest in these films multiplied! Machine learning in movies: that should be quite a genre unto itself, truth?
What we once thought were unrealistic scenarios, is now unfolding in the real world. Applications such as automatic text generation, robots that cook and deliver food, sports franchises that use machine learning to sign and trade players: this field transcends borders.
And when there is a story to tell, Movies are never far behind!
Here I present them 10 movies about machine learning that normally fly under the radar of most movie viewers (and data scientists). You will still recognize a couple of favorites (como Moneyball) But there are some that I'm sure you've missed. Add them to your to-do list!

One of the most shocking and profound stories in terms of the power of machine learning. The first Blade Runner, launched in 1982, it was a box office bomb. It was a movie ahead of its time.

A couple of things that caught my attention as a data scientist:
- Ethics in AI: the film reflects all the philosophical questions, like what tags should be assigned to replicants and what happens when artificial characters end up procreating.
- Strong AI: general artificial intelligence (AGI), also known as strong AI, is the ability of a machine to make reasonable human-like decisions
- Natural language generation: the movie shows exceptionally advanced capabilities for understanding voice commands
Chances are you've seen this movie before. But if you haven't, You must do it immediately!
It is possible to feed algorithms and make a machine work, but can we instill in them emotions? This field of thought has prompted many debates and arguments worldwide. (is still an often debated topic in tech circles).
The AI movie, Directed by the great Steven Spielberg, presents the story of a robot boy who wishes to nurture human emotions.
Some futuristic techniques that caught my eye while watching this movie:
- Emotional intelligence: in addition to making machines simply 'smart', we are on our way to empower them with human-like emotions. Not very different from you and me. It might be amazing to see this technology emerge soon!!
- Inclusive AI world: you can love a robot and robots can love you. With everything advanced Computer vision, Natural language processing (NLP) and other machine learning techniques, this could soon be possible.
Starring Robin Williams, this movie is a drama about how a life powered by artificial intelligence strives to become a human being. The Cyborg is used as a butler for a wealthy family in the movie and, as time goes by, begins to explore your capabilities beyond intelligence.
Begins to connect with the youngest member of the family in an emotional way. In a story spanning two centuries, Andrew learns the intricacies of humanity, life and love.

Here are some observations from the movie relevant to a data scientist:
- It was cognitive: the movie leaps into the 'cognitive age’ with machines capable of thinking and making decisions like humans.
- Ethics in AI: we must really focus on what is encoded on the machines. Their ability to correlate is much more advanced than ours. To keep the AI health check intact, it is important to encode the correct ethics and cultural values into the machine.
The intelligent machine in the movie has lived several generations; imagine the amount of knowledge you have accumulated over time. How will we be able to live with this intelligence? A deep question that has been on my mind since I saw this movie.
4. Ex Machina
Keyed up, fascinating and simply intriguing. You'll love this action packed movie based on machine learning.
Ex Machina makes strong case for both sides of the machine learning equation.
This sci-fi classic features a programmer from 24 years you have the opportunity to spend a week with a prodigy programmer, Nathan Issac. Nathan conducts an experiment to build the world's first artificial intelligence system on the body of a beautiful robot girl, And then the suspense begins!

This movie sparked my thoughts on: Can an advanced machine learning system develop a mind of its own and rival our humanity with something we can't yet see coming??
This movie is guaranteed to give you goosebumps. Morgan took my breath away countless times and if you like the action horror genre, this movie will captivate you.
Lee Weathers is a “risk management specialist” for the genetic engineering company SynSect. He arrives at a site that houses his L-9 project, an artificial being with synthetic DNA infused with nanotechnology named Morgan. Morgan displays incredible autonomous decision-making abilities and sophisticated emotional responses. He's smarter than humans and keeps maturing with his answers.
A corporate risk management consultant must decide whether or not to eliminate an artificially created humanoid being.

This certainly brings up the case of autonomous vehicles.. Think about it: if an autonomous vehicle collides with a human, Who is responsible? Are the programmers or the vehicle? Still no clear answer (despite the multiple conferences and policies surrounding this).
6. Automata
Automata talks about how the human race is turning away from the world and machines are stepping in to take control. Sounds familiar? But wait till you see the movie.
The movie begins with solar flares that make the earth's surface radioactive and kill humans.. The remaining humans who managed to survive build robots to help them rebuild what they lost..
Jacq works for a robot manufacturing company. While working together with the robots, discover that they start stealing and displaying unethical behavior. These robots also begin to influence Jacq with philosophical talks and, as a last resort, gives them the nuclear powered battery they need to build intersection robots. The climax? That's incredibly powerful.
7. Transcendence
Oh, I love this movie. Touches many aspects, including AGI and the ethics debate.
An artificial intelligence system, played by Johnny Depp, start building an army of cyborg zombies (all modeled after him). Creating a sensitive machine doesn't sit well with your team. When extremists try to kill the doctor, inadvertently become the catalyst for your success. His wife and brother can only watch as Depp's thirst for knowledge evolves into an ever-present quest for power., and his loved ones soon realize that it may be impossible to stop him.
That is certainly an attack on AGI, It is not like this?
8. She
This movie shows a tool closer to the next level of evolution. ‘Her’ refers to an amazing operating system, smart and advanced that's designed to keep your life on track.
This movie is a soft and moving story about a programmer. As a data scientist, it is inspiring to witness such evolutions that glorify human life. Can a programmer fall in love with software? Good, You have to solve this!

Joaquin Pheonix delivers another masterful performance in this film that I'm sure will stand the test of time. A must see!
9. Moneyball
Moneyball is the most influential story in the modern sports industry. It has spawned data-driven revolutions in all sports, like basketball, the baseball (on which it is based), American football and now even soccer and cricket.
Based on a true story, Moneyball tells the story of Billy Bean. He's building the Oakland A baseball team for next season. With less money in hand than its rivals, resorts to relying on data to drive your decision-making process. Worth seeing what happens next.

I recommend this movie to anyone involved in the machine learning profession. Imitation game aptly describes the incredible power of math, computing and logical thinking.
Alan Turing is a legend in the world of machine learning (if you haven't heard of him or his work, this is a good place to start).
