It is not easy to enter the world of data warehouses without being clear about the terminology most used to refer to its components. Various data storage concepts are of particular relevance to the data storage and it is essential that business users become familiar with them.

The Data Storage Concepts You Should Know About

It is not necessary to have a technical preparation, nor be a specialist in the field of data storage, to know some of the terms that are used more frequently. Are data storage concepts are as follows:

  • Attribute: the field of an attribute is represented by a column within an object (entity). A table, a view or a report can be considered an object.
  • Bottom Tool: This type of tool is a software application, generally resident on both the client and the server, which helps in the production data extraction procedure.
  • Client: This is the name of any software application that is used to extract or download applications, data or some kind of service from a host system.
  • Data market– A data market is an object-oriented subset of data. Its main feature is its classic design, which greatly facilitates its use.
  • Entity: this is one of the objects that exist in any database like a table, a view, a report or the screen.
  • Front tool: With this client tool, data stored in a relational database can be retrieved or manipulated.
  • Gigabyte– A gigabyte is a unit of measure of capacity that is equal to 1 trillion bytes.
  • HTTP: These acronyms refer to the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP); a fixed set of commands that are used during a hypertext link between a client and the server.
  • Index: is the link that links one table to another, providing quick access to the rows of one table based on the values of one or more columns of the other table.
  • Metadata: are data about data, one of the data storage concepts more important. The metadata explains the type of information that each field in the tables should contain.
  • Normalize: This term establishes the procedure for eliminating the data redundancy separating them into several different tables.
  • OLAP: online analytical processing is a set of software tools that provides a three-dimensional framework for decision making.
  • Protocol: is a formal description of the message formats and the rules that must be observed to exchange data between two or more devices.
  • Relational database): is a system that supports SQL and it is composed entirely of tables. In a database of this type, each column is a particular type of data and each row is a unique instance of that data, individually identified by a primary key.
  • SQL: these acronyms refer to structured query language, which one is used with relational databases. SQL enables users to establish the structure and organization of stored data (This is why it is one of the data storage concepts that must be known); while verifying and maintaining its integrity and access control, the relationships between the stored data items are defined.
