How to align index numbers in Word

Undoubtedly, insert the index in a Word document is very convenient, especially for those who will read it later. But not everyone knows that Microsoft software has a feature to automatically align all numbers in the index..

To use this function, available for all versions of Microsoft Word…you must do it:

  • Select theindex you wrote;
  • Right click on the selected text;
  • Please select “Paragraph” on the menu.

Now, in the window that has been opened, you have to click the button in the lower left corner Tabs to get your result, then:

  • Enter the number 17 in the frame Flange position;
  • Check the box Correct alignment and later to confirm click Decide.

Now repeat the operation you just performed, now entering the number sixteen in the same box as before, checking the box Left alignment with Fill character2“. And confirm by clicking Decide and then Okey.

At this point you can align index numbers:

  • If the index is of type
    • Chapter 1 page 1;
    • Chapter 2 page 2;
    • etc.
  • Then you must position yourself with the cursor at the end of each chapter by pressing simultaneously Space Y Proceedings on the keyboard.
  • If instead the index is of the type
    • Chapter 1 ………. 1;
    • Episode 2 ………. 2;
    • etc.
  • Place the cursor at the end of the dots for each item in the list and press the key.. Proceedings keyboard.
