Open PKG files

The PKG extension can belong to different types of files, which often makes users wonder: How and what to open? In the next post we will try to answer that.

PKG opening options

Strictly speaking, most PKG files are files with very different data types inside. Thus, the format in question is equivalent to the PAK, of which we have already talked about how to open it.

PKG files can reference components in Apple operating system installation packages, packaged assets for some video games, as well as content downloaded from the PlayStation Store, or a compressed 3D model design created in Parametric Technology products. Whatever the case, a powerful filing cabinet can take care of opening those files.

Method 1: WinRAR

Eugene Roshal's popular filing cabinet supports many compressed data formats, including PKG.

1. Open the program and use the built-in file manager to get to the target document. Once this is done, double click LKM in the PKG you want to open.
2. The contents of the file will open for viewing.

Some specific variants of PKG files that WinPAR cannot open, therefore if you have difficulties, go to next method.

Method 2: 7-Zip

The free 7-Zip archive utility can open almost any file format, including those not compatible with other file cabinets, which makes it very suitable for our current task.

1. After starting the file, use the file viewer to navigate to the location of the PKG file and open it by double clicking on it.
2. The contents of the file will open for viewing.

We have not found any specific downside to using 7-Zip to open PKG files, so we suggest this program for the task in question.

Conclution:

In summary, we would like to point out that most of the PKG files that a Windows user can find are macOS X installation packages or encrypted files from PlayStation Store, the latter being impossible to open on a computer.
